Public Health Team of the Year
Cavalier County Health District is honored to have been recognized as the 2026 North Dakota Public Health Association (NDPHA) Public Health Team of the Year. This award recognizes a team that has worked collaboratively on a unique, creative, or simply outstanding public health effort, program, or goal over the past year.
While we are incredibly proud of this recognition, we know this award represents far more than the work of our team alone. Public health is built on partnerships, collaboration, and communities coming together to support one another. This work truly wouldn't be possible without the many partners who help us every day.
We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to the Cavalier County Board of Health for their continued guidance, encouragement, and support. Their leadership and commitment to improving the health and well-being of our communities play an important role in moving public health forward.
Youth for Change Summit Empowers Local Students
On March 4, 2026, Langdon Area High School hosted the Youth for Change Summit, bringing together middle and high school students and staff for a day focused on youth leadership, tobacco prevention, and honest dialogue. Through presentations on the risks of nicotine and industry influence, student-centered activities, and interactive discussions with community leaders, students explored how vaping and tobacco are impacting their lives, families, and school environment.
A highlight of the day was the Unfiltered Project, where students shared personal reflections on tobacco and vaping, alongside a group North Dakota puzzle activity that captured what they learned, what matters to them, and how they hope to create change. These activities provided a safe and supportive space for students to express their perspectives and engage in meaningful conversations.
The summit was made possible through partnerships between Cavalier County Health District, Langdon Area Schools, NDSU Extension, and Tobacco Free North Dakota. Students from the school played a key role in shaping the event and helping lead activities throughout the day.
The summit empowered students to recognize the importance of their voices in building healthier communities. Their insights reflect both awareness and resilience, reinforcing the value of continued investment in youth-driven prevention efforts across rural North Dakota.

Youth Safety Day
On May 18, Progressive Agriculture Safety Day brought together 151 students in grades 3–6 from Langdon Area Elementary School for a half-day of hands-on learning about personal health and safety. Led by local and regional volunteers, students learned to recognize hazards and make safer choices in areas such as electrical safety, fire safety, calling 911, gun safety, ATV safety, bike safety, helmet use, mental health, and lawn mower safety. The event emphasized lifelong safety skills through interactive education.
CCHD would like to thank the Progressive Agriculture Foundation and all participating sponsors and volunteers for their vital support, including Minnkota Power Cooperative, Langdon Prairie Health, Langdon Ambulance, Cavalier County Sheriff's Department, NDSU Extension, Safe Kids Grand Forks, Cavalier County Rural Electric Cooperative, Langdon Fire Department, and Langdon Elementary School.
Community Gardens are Growing!
Our community garden boxes are officially planted and beginning to come to life! Over the coming weeks, they'll continue to grow and eventually provide fresh fruits and vegetables for community members to enjoy.
Garden boxes can be found throughout the community, and we're also excited to introduce the new in-ground community garden located at the northeast corner of the Cavalier County Courthouse, as well as the FREE seed library available at the Cavalier County Library.
Cavalier County Health District is proud to support projects that encourage healthy eating, local engagement, and connection to where our food comes from. As you're out and about this summer, take a moment to stop by, see how things are growing, and enjoy being part of something local.
