BISMARCK, N.D. – Child welfare and behavioral health professionals, educators and others who work with children and families to promote strong, stable families will benefit from attending the 2023 North Dakota Family-Based Services Conference, March 28-31, at the Holiday Inn of Fargo.
Co-sponsored by the North Dakota Family-Based Services Association and North Dakota Health and Human Services’ Children and Family Services Section, the conference offers training and networking opportunities. Programing also highlights services and recognizes individuals and organizations for their work to maintain, strengthen and empower families.
The conference begins Tuesday, March 28, with training on personal and professional change management. Presenter Melissa Marshall will lead a session titled, “Embracing Change with Dale Carnegie,” 12:30-2:30 p.m. CT, followed by “Leading Change without Authority,” 3-5 p.m. CT.
Featured Presenters
Researcher and expert Dr. Hilary Cuthrell will give the March 29 keynote presentation on the impact of incarceration on children and families. She will also lead afternoon workshops on parent-child contact during incarceration and the obstacles parents face when reentering society and reunifying with family. The late afternoon workshop will include discussion on pathways to incarceration, data on incarceration and sentencing, and planning for successful reentry and reunification.
On March 30, the keynote presenter is school psychologist Sarah How, who will share her family’s story about adoption, which includes blending adoptive children with biological children, understanding trauma, and inviting their adoptive children's extended family to be a part of their life. She will also lead two afternoon workshops. The first focuses on how to thrive inside and out using neuroscience for emotional and behavioral regulation. The second workshop titled, “The Teacher Within: A Mindful Journey Toward Well-Being,” will share information that can be applied beyond the classroom.
On March 31, psychologist and director of the Lakeside Center for Behavioral Change Dr. Renae Reinardy will give a keynote on moving from burnout to brilliance and living your best life in community service.
The conference will also feature breakout workshops on ethics, building strong school-community partnerships, brief strategic family therapy, FirstLink and statewide crisis response services, healing, empowering and learning about psychosis (HELP); borderline personality disorder; supervision as a critical element of ethical practice; and adolescent substance use disorders. In addition, on March 29, a mother and daughter will share their experiences as a family impacted by incarceration.

Organizers encourage social workers, counselors, addiction counselors, therapists, educators, family advocates, youth leaders, foster parents, adoptive parents,
juvenile justice professionals, parent aides, students and others to attend.
The conference is approved for wraparound recertification and continuing education credits are available.
Registration fees range from $210 for the entire NDFBSA conference, $100 for one-day registration on Wednesday or Thursday and $75 for Friday’s session. There is also a $100 parent/student registration fee available that covers the conference. People can register until the start of the conference.
