HHS highlights resources for well-being this holiday season

The holidays can be a joyous time of celebration and tradition. They can also come with challenges to health and well-being. It can be common to feel additional stress and other behavioral health concerns.  North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) Behavioral Health Division offers resources and support for those who may be facing challenges this time of year.

Experiencing a behavioral health crisis or know someone who is?

Hope is on the line. Call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline anytime, day or night. Or chat at 988lifeline.org/chat.

Find a Mental Health Program - People often don’t get the mental health help they need because they don’t know where to start. Search North Dakota’s Mental Health Directory hhs.nd.gov/behavioral-health/directory to find help for you, your family or friends or other loved one. Services are listed by location, specialty and more.

Recovery Talk

If you are struggling or in recovery from a substance use disorder, call or text Recovery Talk at (701291-7901 to talk with a trained peer support specialist. This is a free and confidential service that offers a safe and supportive environment to individuals struggling with addiction. Visit hhs.nd.gov/behavioral-health/recovery-talk for more information.

Speak Volumes

This holiday season by making safe and healthy choices if you choose to drink alcohol. Visit hhs.nd.gov/speak-volumes for resources and tools to understand the differences between drinks.

Do you really know how much alcohol is in your drink? Use the Alculator, a browser-based app where you can learn how much alcohol you’re consuming, so you can make responsible decisions.

Parents Lead

The holiday break from school offers additional opportunities for parents and caregivers to engage with their children. Healthy bonding and attachment between parent and child is one of the biggest factors preventing behavioral health issues like underage drinking, drug use, depression and anxiety. For resources and support, visit Parents Lead at www.parentslead.org and follow Parents Lead on Facebook and Instagram. Check out these specific resources:

  • If your child ready to stay home alone? Review this resource.
  • Print, cut up and put these Conversation Starters in a jar for when you are at the dinner table.

The Behavioral Health Division is responsible for reviewing and identifying service needs and activities in the state's behavioral health system to ensure health and safety, access to services and quality services. It also establishes quality assurance standards for the licensure of substance use disorder program services and facilities and provides policy leadership in partnership with public and private entities.
